Successful completion of this fast-track Level 3 Certificate in Music Technology supports progression to one of Blackpool School of Arts’ exciting Level 4 programmes - such as the HNC in Music or Music Production - starting September 2026.

These pathways open doors to careers in the creative industries, including music production, sound engineering, live events, audio post-production, and digital content creation. As a student, you’ll build on your foundational skills in recording, mixing and digital audio, deepen your creative practice, and gain hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and workflows.

Key information

Entry Requirements

Applicants to this adult fast-track Music Technology programme should meet one of the following criteria:

  • A Level 2 qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. Music, Music Technology, Sound Engineering), or
  • Relevant industry experience in music production, live sound, or audio content creation.

In addition, applicants should have:

  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above, or a recognised Level 2 equivalent.
  • A successful interview with a tutor to assess suitability and motivation.
  • The ability to study independently and manage coursework alongside other commitments.
  • A genuine interest in music technology and the wider creative industries.
  • Good communication skills and a proactive, hardworking approach.

We also welcome applications from individuals who can demonstrate relevant work or life experience. Recognition of prior learning may be considered in line with awarding body regulations.

If English is not your first language, you will need to achieve an IELTS score of at least 5.5.

Fees and funding

Whilst many adult courses are fully funded for 19+ learners, funding can depend both on the course itself and/or the learner's personal circumstances, including their current income levels and previous qualifications.

Extra costs and equipment

All essential resources for this Music Technology programme—including access to industry-standard software, studio equipment, audio interfaces, microphones, and library facilities—are included in the course fee.

As this is a predominantly digital and studio-based course, we recommend - but do not require - that learners have access to the following items to support independent study and project work:

  • A 1TB external hard drive for storing audio files and project backups
  • A well-powered laptop capable of running music production software
  • Headphones suitable for mixing and monitoring
  • Optional: A portable audio recorder or microphone for capturing primary sound sources

Estimated cost: approximately £250 (excluding laptop)

While personal equipment can enhance your learning experience, computers and music production facilities are available on campus. College laptops are also accessible through the library loan system.

What will I learn?

On this fast-track Music Technology course, you’ll develop essential skills in digital audio production, sound design, and studio practice—creating your own music and audio projects from concept to completion. The curriculum is designed to give you the confidence and technical ability needed for progression into Higher Education or employment in the music and audio industries. You’ll respond to creative briefs and real-world challenges that reflect current industry practice, all while working in a supportive, adult-focused learning environment.

Industry placement, field trips and guest speakers

As a fast-track evening course, this Music Technology programme does not include a formal work placement. However, you’ll benefit from the strong industry links maintained by Blackpool School of Arts and its experienced staff, which will broaden your understanding of the sector and inspire your creative practice.

Throughout the course, you’ll engage with briefs and hear from professionals working in music production, sound engineering, and audio content creation. These sessions offer valuable insights into the realities of working in the music and audio industries, helping you build your professional network and prepare for your next step—whether that’s further study or entering the creative workforce.

How will I learn?

Learning on this Music Technology course is practical, collaborative and designed specifically for adult learners. You’ll work on real-world audio and music production projects in our specialist studios, using industry-standard software and equipment.

Through workshops, demonstrations and collaborative sessions, you’ll be encouraged to experiment, share ideas and learn from your peers. Group critiques and tutor feedback will help you refine your technical and creative skills.

You’ll also engage in independent study, supported by experienced tutors who understand the needs of adult returners and career changers. The course is structured to fit around busy lives, with flexible evening delivery and a supportive, inclusive environment that values your experience, creativity and ambition.

The aim of this is to enrich students’ learning experience, giving them an insight into what working in the industry is really like.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment on this Music Technology course is designed to reflect real-world creative practice and prepare you for progression into Higher Education or the music and audio industries. While there are no formal written exams, you will complete an externally set and assessed controlled project, which allows you to demonstrate your technical and creative skills in a structured, industry-relevant context.

In addition to this, your work will be presented through live critiques, audio showcases, and a portfolio of work. You’ll receive constructive feedback from tutors and peers throughout the course, helping you refine your practice and reflect on your progress.

Your portfolio will document your journey through the programme, capturing your creative outputs, technical development and reflective evaluations. This approach ensures you leave the course with a strong body of work, the confidence to progress and a clear understanding of your creative identity.
