What You'll Be Assessed On
Specifically, the CENWAT Initial Assessment assesses:
- Understanding of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and relevant Water Byelaws
- Protection of the public water supply, including backflow prevention and contamination risks
- System design and installation principles for compliant central heating and hot water systems
- Correct selection and use of materials, fittings and components
- Cross-connection control and fluid category awareness
- Commissioning, testing and maintenance considerations
- Common non-compliances and how to avoid them on real job sites
The assessment is knowledge-based, focusing on how regulations apply in practical, on-site situations rather than hands-on skills testing. Successful completion demonstrates that you can work compliantly, safely and responsibly when installing or maintaining systems connected to the mains water supply.
How You’ll Learn
The CENWAT Initial Assessment is an assessment rather than a training course which takes place over 4 hours at our dedicated gas training centre. You will have time to familiarise yourself with the equipment and tools at the centre prior to each practical assessment where you will be observed completing specified tasks by the assessor. The theory test(s) will be conducted in a classroom environment.

How You’ll Be Assessed
The CENWAT Initial Assessment is split into two parts:
Theory: These are written assessments based on multiple choice and true or false statements. The theory test[s)is what is called an open book test, which means you can refer to reference materials to support your answers.
Practical: These will be hands-on tasks on live boilers where candidates must demonstrate their competence in real-life scenarios.
