Please note that whilst the course does not lead to a regulated qualification, the certificate issued on successful completion is normally valid for 5 years.

Entry Requirements

Trainees should have a minimum in one of the following

  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing or equivalent earlier certification
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Domestic Installation) or equivalent earlier certification
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Heating and Ventilating (Industrial and Commercial Installation) or equivalent earlier certification
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Oil-Fired Technical Services or equivalent earlier certification
  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 in Gas Installation and Maintenance or equivalent earlier certification
  • Heating installers with minimum 3 years of experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by manufacturer courses certification or Gas Safe Register, OFTEC, MCS or HETAS registration

AND if not included in the above qualification

  • Water Regulations / Water Byelaws

Stand-alone technical certificates/Vocationally Related Qualifications (VRQ) (non-competency based) are NOT acceptable

Please note: Where wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is a mandatory requirement of the course, it is the responsibility of the learner to ensure that they are able to wear such equipment. What You’ll Learn

Designed to give installers the skills and knowledge required to correctly install Air Source heat pumps. This course has been designed with the intention of meeting the requirement of the National Occupational Standards and industry working groups.

You will be provided with a training manual, the training manual allows you to study in your own time, at your own pace, to reduce the time spent on the training course to a minimum. It is important that you study the content of the manual throughout your course to ensure that you are properly prepared and can take part in discussions during the course. The manual includes:

  • Heat pumps in context
  • How a Heat pump works – principles and components
  • Insulation, heat losses and the effect of heating system design
  • Domestic hot water, buffer tanks and solar coils
  • Health and Safety
  • Heat pump installation
  • Maintenance and fault finding

This course is recognised as a demonstration of competence for the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

How You’ll Learn

The course combines both practical and theory based elements. Some time will be spent in the classroom cementing all the key knowledge and regulations installers need to be aware of. This will then be complemented by practical sessions in a dedicated sustainability centre where you will have the opportunity to witness how air source heat pumps are installed and actually operate in a real-word environment. There will also be time to ask questions, discuss potential challenges and share experience with other attendees.
