Electrotechnical Experienced Worker - Level 3

Acquire the Skills for an Installation Electrician ECS ‘Gold Card’

This City & Guilds programme is an opportunity for individuals with at least five years experience working in the electrotechnical industry in either an employed or self-employed capacity who have yet to gain a formally recognised Level 3 qualification and would like to do so.

The NVQ 2346-02 (which replaces the NVQ 2356-99) gives you the opportunity to prove your technical knowledge, performance and competence and demonstrate that you can work to the required industry standards. Getting properly accredited means you are then in a position to apply for an Installation Electrician 'Gold Card' under the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS).

Prior to the qualification being awarded, you must have undertaken and passed the following qualifications:

  • 18th edition
  • 2391 – Initial Verification Qualification (Inspect & Test)
  • AM2E

If you have not already done so, we can arrange for you to take whichever qualifications your need prior to submitting your portfolio of work for assessment. Please note that these are not included in the cost of this qualification and will need to be paid for separately as and when you want to complete them.

Key Course Information

Entry Requirements

The Experienced Worker Assessment is for electricians who have been working in the industry for at least 5 years (not including time spent in full or part-time training) but have not formally completed an industry apprenticeship or equivalent Level 3 NVQ qualification.

You must hold a relevant Level 2 qualification. If this is not the case, we can arrange for you to complete this alongside your Level 3 NVQ.

You will need to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and competence to the standard of the Level 3 electrotechnical apprenticeship. There is a Skills Scan at the start of the programme to assess this which you must be completed prior to enrolling on the course. To enable you to complete the programme successfully, you must be currently working as a practising electrician to generate the evidence you will need for the performance units of the programme. Some of your previous technical qualifications may also meet some of the Experienced Worker assessment requirements, which means you will only need to provide any outstanding items of evidence.

Please note: The qualification is not suitable for new entrants to the electrotechnical industry, apprentices, or those who have completed an electrotechnical technical qualification with less than five years relevant experience as an electrician.

What You'll Learn

To gain the City & Guilds NVQ 2346-03 Level 3 you will need to prove your competence whilst working as an electrician. This means being able to prove your practical skills AND underpinning knowledge, to a satisfactory standard. Proof of underpinning knowledge is usually by production of a technical certificate and professional discussion.

You will need to gather evidence from the workplace, which will be assessed and verified by your trainer at B&FC. The evidence should indicate that you are working to the standards expected of an electrician, over a variety of activities, and, have an understanding of the appropriate electrical theory.

How You'll Learn

Unlike a traditional training course where there is a structured lesson plan and you are expected to attend at specific times, this programme is designed to be tailored to individual requirements.

You will be advised what evidence/qualifications you need to produce for your portfolio based on what you already have and what you need to complete. You will be given access to our online e-Portfolio system, One File where you can write up the information to document your competence and knowledge as a working electrician.

B&FC will provide monthly drop-in sessions which you can attend if you need extra support compiling your evidence and your trainer will make two site visits to complete face-to-face assessments/observations which will be written up and submit as part of your portfolio.

Expert tutors

All tutors involved in the delivery of courses and/or assessments within the College are approved to teach and/or assess the subjects and modules they deliver.

The approval process ensures that staff delivering and/or assessing a given programme are appropriately qualified, with relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice.

How You'll Be Assessed

Your portfolio of evidence will be assessed and verified prior to being submitted to City and Guilds for approval. Your assessor will provide you with ongoing support and feedback until you successfully complete your NVQ.
