This qualification is for managers who are keen to develop their role and associated skills. It aims to develop personal management capabilities, improve decision-making operational leadership and people management. Designed for middle managers as well as those aspiring to senior management, the qualification develops key skills such as managing resources, recruitment and information management.

You will develop all the competencies you need to be an effective middle manager. A Diploma in Management and Leadership is the benchmark qualification for full Chartered Management Institute (CMI) membership, taking you another step towards Chartered Manager status.

Entry onto this programme will depend upon your previous experience, qualifications and whether or not you are currently working in a management position. You will need either a Level 3 qualification in an appropriate discipline or substantial relevant work / voluntary experience to be accepted for this course.

How will I learn?

Teaching and learning methods are designed to deliver the programme outcomes of the CMI Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management and to support you in becoming an independent researcher, self-starter and lifelong learner with a high degree of employability.

A range of delivery techniques, including problem-based learning, lectures, seminars, webinars, work-based learning and other interactive activities are deployed on the programme. You will be encouraged to conduct wider reading around your subject area to facilitate independent learning and study skills, guided and supported by staff members' expertise and specialisms.

The range of assessment techniques comprises written reports, essays, case studies, oral presentations, professional discussions and projects.

Assessment is entirely based on coursework. You will study the following module:

  • Principles of Management and Leadership

To write a report on the principles of management and leadership and the factors impacting the styles and approaches adopted by managers and leaders in their own organisational context.

The learner may draw upon their own experience of managing and leading individuals and teams within their own organisation. They may present work-based evidence accompanied by reports / reflective accounts to meet each assessment criterion.
