Summary

Our newly developed BA (Hons) Higher Education in English Studies, is designed to allow you to explore English Language, Literature and Professional Writing and its application in a world where language is increasingly fluid, changing, and crucial in the workplace.

Our modules include exciting and contemporary approaches to English suitable for all tastes covering fiction, non-fiction and creative practice. You will work with industry experts and professional tutors to develop your language skills in a range of applications and environments.

You will study a wide range of international literary works from the 19th Century and post-war period to the present day and will develop a deep understanding of the history of English, how language works within a variety of texts and contexts and how it can be utilised to solve real-world issues in contemporary society.

You will have the freedom to explore your own interests while developing your critical thinking and analytical skills. You also will develop advanced skills in professional and technical writing, allowing you to express your opinion and creative ideas for a range of purposes.

As a Level 6 English Studies student, you will also develop your understanding of the field of Contemporary Applied Linguistics, which provides an opportunity for the exploration of subdisciplines in preparation for employment and/or post-graduate study in areas such as Forensic Linguistics, Language and the Digital Media, Medical Linguistics, Legal Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Corpus Linguistics and Cognitive Linguistics.

This programme is ideal for students wishing to embark on careers such as teaching in primary, secondary, further and higher education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), communication support worker, communications officer, librarians, learning resource advisors and library, arts and culture administration assistants, software engineer, journalism, advertising, careers in media including digital/social media, marketing and website design, digital copyrighting, writing/creative writing, writing for television, theatre and stage, publishing, editing, proofreading, writing for business, management and leadership roles, public relations and communications, speech therapy, applied linguistics or research and academic writing related careers.

Where can this subject lead?

Career progression

Following completion of the BA Hons in English Studies, you will be eligible to progress onto teaching related post graduate programmes such as the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Primary, PGCE Secondary, PGCE Post Compulsory or join direct teacher training provision and School-Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT).

You may also be eligible to progress to subject specific post-graduate study programmes such as the MA in English, MA English Literature and Language, MA Language and Linguistics and MA English ESOL at institutions such as Lancaster University, University of Liverpool, Liverpool John Moore’s, Manchester Metropolitan University and Edge Hill University.

The BA (Hons) English Studies further offers you a clear pathway into a wide range of employment options and may include publisher, playwright, press officer, professional writer, copywriter, teaching, marketing manager and journalist.

Entry Requirements

You are required to have completed the Foundation Degree in English Studies at B&FC or a similar Foundation Degree in an English-related discipline to embark on this programme.

If embarking on a teaching career, Maths GCSE Grade C/4 or above and Science Grade C/4 may also be required – if you have not yet achieved these, you can study these alongside your main programme.

Extra costs and equipment

You will need access to a computer, to allow you to conduct research and complete and submit assessments.

The Learning Resource Centre at Blackpool and The Fylde College provides an extensive range of books and on-line versions to support your English Studies degree. However, you may wish to purchase books, which may incur additional costs.

Throughout the year, there may be opportunities to attend extra-curricular activities or field trips relating to the programme, which may incur a small cost.

Taught sessions will be at the University Campus where car parking fees apply.

You will have the opportunity to work on ‘live briefs’ provided by our external industry partners, as part of your professional development. In addition, with the support of your tutors, you will be encouraged to seek out work placements to enhance your learning experience.

How will I learn?

You will engage in a range of innovative teaching and learning methods which will support your learning and readiness for employment. This includes the application of digital technologies to support an inclusive learning experience. In addition, peer learning workshops will foster collaborative active social learning to support the co-creation of knowledge and the sharing of good practice.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in a variety of ways on the programme, which are intended to develop knowledge and skills that are beneficial to further study and employment. Assessment methods which you can expect to engage with include essays, reflective essays and critical reflection, critical literature review, presentations, creation of original artefacts, creative portfolio, controlled assessment and dissertation.

The mixture of practical and written methods of assessing your progress, will offer you the opportunity to develop skills essential to practice and build your confidence in progressing to employment and further study.
