Summary

This qualification enables learners to develop knowledge and understanding of caring for individuals with dementia. Successful completion of the units will allow learners to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of dementia and its effects. It will also support progression into relevant employment within the health and social care sector.

The qualification doesn’t infer competence in the work role but can be used to support the underpinning knowledge and understanding needed for those working in or towards a dementia care role.

The objectives of this qualification are to enable learners to understand:

  • Types of dementia and the importance of early diagnosis
  • Person-centred approaches in dementia care
  • The role of communication, interaction and inclusion in dementia care and support
  • The use of medication to support individuals with dementia

This Level 3 Certificate in Understanding the Principles of Dementia Care will not confirm competence in a job role but will provide an opportunity for learners to develop knowledge and build CPD.

It can also be used to enhance the CV and provide background knowledge for those looking to gain employment in the health and social care sector.

Progression could lead onto Level 3 Diploma in Adult care and Higher Education

This course will teach you the following:

  • Skills to work with individuals with dementia
  • The diverse forms of dementia, signs, and symptoms
  • The importance of using a person-centred approach to support individuals with dementia
  • How to use various forms of communication to understand and be understood by others
  • How dementia affects behaviour and how all behaviour is a form of communication

To be awarded the Level 3 Certificate in Understanding the Principles of Dementia Care, learners are required to successfully complete 7 mandatory units. Which includes a total of 21 credits.

  • Unit 01 - Understanding dementia (3 credits)
  • Unit 02 - Understand how person-centred approaches are used to underpin the care and support of individuals with dementia (3 credits)
  • Unit 03 - Principles of communication and interaction in dementia care and support (3 credits)
  • Unit 04 - Supporting positive interaction, occupation, and activity in dementia care (3 credits)
  • Unit 05 - Principles of equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care and support (3 credits)
  • Unit 06 - Understand how to support individuals with dementia to exercise choice and rights (3 credits)
  • Unit 07 - Principles of the administration of medication and well-being of individuals with dementia (3 credits)

Industry placement, field trips and guest speakers

No work placements are required for this course.

How will I learn?

The course is delivered 1 day a week over 17 weeks, from the course start date. 4.5 -hour classroom-based sessions with specialist course tutor. The tutor will also be available for support and will guide you from the beginning to the completion of your qualification.

Within these sessions there will be tutor delivery, question and answer, discussion, group work tasks and individual tasks. The assessment tasks take the form of Task briefs. Assignments/ Underpinning knowledge questions.

You will also have access to a Virtual Learning Platform CANVAS which will provide you with additional resources to support completion of the qualification.

The assessment is assessed by assignments holistically across all units the build-up and implementation of Power point presentations, case studies. Written to build evidence towards a complete portfolio of knowledge.
