What will I learn? Key information Course SummaryLaboratory technicians work across a wide range of organisations, including but not exclusively, in chemical, primary and secondary pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, formulated products, nuclear companies; and analytical science services, dental laboratories and educational establishments. Working at the forefront of technology, technicians are primarily responsible for carrying out both routine and one-off laboratory testing (and manufacturing where relevant) and performing a variety of technical support functions across the organisation. In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with the laboratory manager and colleagues, internal departments such as manufacturing, procurement and quality, internal customers such as medical staff, teaching staff and students, external suppliers and customers such as service engineers, delivery drivers, regulatory bodies and inspection teams e.g. HSE. Entry RequirementsApplicants are considered on an individual basis, but our companies favour C/4 in GCSE English and maths, contributing to 5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including science Qualification ObtainedBSc (Hons) Project Management Industry Placement and Field TripsApprentices will be employed as part of their programme and may have the opportunity to visit the workplaces of other apprentices from the same programme. The main qualification requires visits to local scientific employers to complete certain modules. Learning and Teaching MethodsApprentices will work on day release (unless another format is agreed), spending 1 day at college and 4 days with the employer. The main programme will consist of a mixture of lectures, scientific investigations and workshops whilst being supported by a VLE full of learning resources. Modules can be changed to suit employer specialisms to some extent, which will be agreed upon creation of the programme. Modules can include: Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques Practical Chemical Analysis Chemical Laboratory Techniques Fundamentals of Science Working in the Science Industry Scientific Investigation Expert Tutors Abi Wylde is the expert tutor for this programme, leading on apprenticeships within science and specialising in subject knowledge and application.
