Course Summary Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems. Plumbing and domestic heating technicians can find themselves working inside or outside a property. Customer service skills and being tidy and respectful are important qualities as they can often find themselves working in customers’ homes as well as on building sites. As a competent Plumbing and Heating Technician, the installation of plumbing and heating systems includes accurate measuring, marking, cutting, bending and jointing metallic and non-metallic pipework. Appliances and equipment can include gas, oil and solid fuel boilers as well as pumps, heat emitters, bathroom furniture or controls as part of a cold water, hot water, and central heating or above ground drainage and rainwater systems. Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technicians are at the forefront of installing new and exciting environmental technologies like heat pumps, solar thermal systems, biomass boilers and water recycling systems. It is important for a plumbing and heating technician to be able to work independently or as a team and use their knowledge and skills to ensure that both the system and appliances are appropriately selected and correctly installed, often without any supervision, and done so in a safe, efficient and economical manner to minimise waste. The Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship standard reflects the needs of employers in a diverse industry and apprentices employed in a wide variety of organisations working in domestic properties, commercial and retail buildings, public buildings, heath care and leisure. The Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician Apprenticeship standard is at Level 3. This apprenticeship is designed to provide the apprentice with the opportunity to develop both the knowledge and skills and core behaviours expected of a competent Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician operating in a number of regulated areas. This assessment strategy, when delivered by high-quality learning providers and assessed by independent end-point assessment organisations will ensure that candidates can progress towards the achievement of the Apprenticeship. An employer-led approach for quality assurance and governance is being developed to ensure the independent end-point assessment organisations are delivering the end assessment on behalf of employers and continually meet employers’ aspirations for their apprentices. Independent end-point assessment organisations referenced within this plan will appear on the ESFA’s Register of End Point Assessment Organisations (RoEPAO). Entry Requirements English and Maths: will be determined by individual employers. Typically, apprentices will have English and Mathematics at level 2 on entry, and all will have achieved that level prior to taking their end-point assessment. It will be a requirement that the newly developed Level 3 Plumbing and Domestic Heating Qualification is achieved prior to taking the end-point Assessment. Each Phase has assessments that must be passed in order to progress to the next Phase they are as follows: Phase 1: a multiple choice on line exam (evolve exam, a Practical Assignment and a health and safety systems evolve Test Phase 2 has a multiple choice evolve exam, a practical assignment Phase 3 has multiple choice evolve exam, a Practical assignment, work log (core) Phase 4 (pathway) Pathway 1 Environmental Technologies Pathway 2 Natural Gas Pathway 3 Oil Pathway 4 Solid Fuel On programme assessment The Qualification is divided into 4 Phases, with an End Point Assessment after the student has reached the Gateway. Each Phase is delivered through a mix of Theory and practical sessions on a day release basis at College and a portfolio of work that is produced by the student and assessed in the work place by an assessor. At the end of each Phase there are assessments that the student will need to pass to progress on to the next Phase of the qualification, when the student completes and passes all 4 phases and has completed their Maths and English level 2 they will be at the Gateway which should be 3 months before their End Point Assessment in this time the student will undergo mock exams to prepare them for the End point assessment. Phases 1 to 3 will cover the plumbing core units listed below: 301 Health and Safety Systems 302 common processes and techniques 303 Scientific principles 304 Planning and supervision 305 Cold water systems 306 Hot water systems 307 Central heating systems 308 Rainwater systems 309 Sanitation systems 310 Environmental technology systems 311 Domestic fuel systems 312 Electrical work and the control of plumbing and domestic heating system. The final Phase 4 is the pathway Phase, this is where the student chooses which area they would like to specialise in, this must be the area that you are able to gather onsite evidence for e.g. work with gas safe engineer if you wish to complete Pathway 2 Natural Gas route. The possible pathways and units are as follows Pathway 1 Environmental Technologies 314 Air source heat pump systems 315 Rainwater harvesting and greywater reuse systems 316 Solar thermal hot water systems Pathway 2 Natural Gas 317 Specific Domestic Core safety for natural gas 318 Install and maintain gas water heating and wet central heating appliances Pathway 3 Oil 319 Core principles of oil fuel systems for dwellings (safety and efficiency) 320 Install, commission, service and maintain oil systems and appliances in the workplace Pathway 4 Solid Fuel 321 Safety principles (solid mineral fuel and biomass combustion) 322 Plan, install, commission, service and maintain solid mineral fuel and biomass combustion appliances. Other Costs and Equipment Needed All construction apprentices are required to adhere to Health & Safety when in the workshops, PPE must be worn at all times. You will need to speak to your employer around any protective clothing you may need to buy, or whether it is provided by them, including items such as Safety boots Safety helmet Hi-vis vest Work trousers Safety glasses Gloves All of the above items can be purchased from local suppliers for a total cost of £45.
