Transition from Apprentice to Fully Qualified Electrician

The AM2S is for electrotechnical apprentices who are training against the Apprenticeship Standard.

Apprentices who are enrolled onto the Apprenticeship Framework, or those on the Level 3 NVQ or the JIB Mature Candidate Assessment should undertake the AM2 assessment.

The AM2S Assessment is broken down into sections below. During some of the practical sections, you’ll be observed by the assessor. To give you confidence prior to taking the assessment, it is worth practising beforehand by asking a colleague to watch you carrying out various tasks and providing feedback on areas when you can improve.

Entry Requirements

The following items must be submitted as part of the gateway check before booking an AM2s assessment:

  • The mandatory AM2S Candidate Checklist
  • The technical qualifications: City & Guilds 601/6299-5 or EAL 601/7345/2
  • Maths & English Level 2

Career Progression & Prospects

Once you have gained the AM2s and become a Qualified Electrician, you can apply for your JIB Gold Card and progress onto the Advanced Assessment of Competence which gives you Approved Electrician status. Alternatively, you could take the 2391 - Inspecting and Testing qualification we offer here at B&FC. Both of these options would increase your chances of securing a promotion and/or a higher salary.

What You'll Be Assessed

You will be assessed on the following units:

Sections A2-A6: Composite Installation – 10 hours

Section B: Inspection, Testing and Certification – 3.5 hours

Section C: Safe Isolation of Circuits – 30 mins

Section D: Fault Diagnosis and Rectification – 2 hours

Section E: Assessment of Applied Knowledge – 1 hour

The time stated is the time you will be given to complete each assessment. You will have additional time to read the instructions and prepare before starting the test.

How You'll Learn

The AM2s Assessment is an assessment rather than a training course so you will not be expected to learn any additional information or skills during this time.

Expert tutors

All tutors involved in the delivery of courses and/or assessments within the College are approved to teach and/or assess the subjects and modules they deliver.

The approval process ensures that staff delivering and/or assessing a given programme are appropriately qualified, with relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice.

How You'll Be Assessed

The AM2s Assessment is conducted over a total of 16 hours, spread across two and a half days. 

You'll perform tasks in specially equipped booths that simulate typical electrical installation wiring systems and be observed by specially trained assessors who will ensure you are carrying out all the practical elements of the Assessment to the required standard both from a technical point of view and in line with health and safety procedures.
