Blackpool Build Up is one of B&FC's dedicated business units which targets long-term unemployed adult residents for employment opportunities within the construction sector.
It is run in partnership with Jobcentre Plus, Blackpool Council and local employers to meet their specific recruitment needs.
The emphasis is on providing hands-on training and developing employability skills so that individuals can achieve sustainable employment within the construction industry.
To date, over 5,100 learners have secured relevant full-time roles within the construction sector.
Build Up's success is recognised by a string of accolades. In 2014, it won the Howard League for Penal Reform's Community Programme Award. The annual Howard League Awards recognise the country's most successful community projects encouraging desistance from crime.
Build Up has also been used by Ofsted as a best practice exemplar across the education sector. More recently, Build Up Manager Roberta Austin collected an MBE for services to Vocational Education.
Other accolades include Finalist for CITB Hero in Construction 2015, Finalist for the BIBAs Most Inspiring Business of the Year 2015 and Construction Business of the Year 2015.
Information for trainees
Students undertake 10 weeks of training over 2 days a week as a general construction operative, obtaining a CSCS card and a certificate in Health and Safety as well as the following Level 1 qualifications:
- Trowel Operations
- Dry Lining
- Handling and storage of materials
- Introduction to working in construction
- Personal work skills
- CV writing
- Exploring job opportunities
- Time management
- Preparation for work
On completion of the course, students are given advice and guidance on progression within the construction sector.
