Higher Education - Welfare and Support

Studying at degree level can mean quite a life change, particularly if you have to move away from home. There’s so much to think about - how you’ll get on with your course, who you’re going to make friends with, what the area will be like and where you’ll live. Don’t worry though. Staff at our Student Advice Centres will provide guidance and support on a range of issues to make your life here run as smoothly as possible. For students with disabilities and learning difficulties, additional support is available from our dedicated Learning Support Team.

Ways we can help

At our Student Advice Centres, you’ll receive professional and practical help not just with degreerelated issues, but also with:

  • paying for your course and living costs and accessing financial support
  • planning your career
  • any personal difficulties, through our counselling service
  • pastoral issues, through the College Chaplain
  • registering with local health services

Where possible the College supports flexible timetabling to fit around the religious calendar. A multi-faith room is available for everyone to use.

Childcare

To find out about the various childcare options available locally contact Family Information Services (Tel: 0800 092 2332). You might even qualify for help with the costs – speak to our welfare advisers for details.

Extra support for those who need it

If you have a disability (including a specific learning difficulty or mental health issue), rest assured you will receive all the support you need throughout your time with us. At our Technical Assessment and Support Centre, we will determine your individual support needs, which may include specialist support tutors, education support workers, assistive technologies, communication aids, notetakers and scribes, and material adaptation.

Our formal disability statement, Welcoming You, tells you more about how we can help with any disability or learning difficulty. To request a copy, or if you’d like more information about how we could help, please contact us. We are also listed at www.disabledgo.com
