Royal Occasion for Nautical Manager Tony

Published: Friday 29 May 2015

A long-standing member of staff from Blackpool and The Fylde College has been rubbing shoulders with royalty at the Queen’s Garden Party. Tony Dumbell, Client Liaison and Technical Manager at Fleetwood Nautical Campus, was invited to attend the event at Buckingham Palace by Guy Platten, CEO of the UK Chamber of Shipping.

Commenting, Tony said: “I feel very honoured to be invited, this is not only recognition of my contribution to the industry during my career, but also national recognition of the work the College does to support the maritime and shipping industry.”

Fleetwood Nautical Campus was the only specialist maritime training centre to be invited to the garden party, further increasing the College’s exposure within the maritime industry. In addition to the palace event, Tony attended a meeting with the Chamber where he had the opportunity to promote trailblazer apprenticeships and national maritime training programmes.

The visit was Tony’s first time inside the palace gates, and an occasion which he was pleased to share with his wife, Jacqueline.

He added: “It took at least five seconds for me to consider the invitation and about the same amount of time for my wife to declare she needed a new dress! Our son booked for us to have dinner at Marco Pierre White’s restaurant the night before the garden party as well so it was a really special occasion.”

Every summer, The Queen hosts garden parties at Buckingham Palace. Guests are generally people who have contributed a large amount to their various organisations or society. The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh were accompanied by Prince Andrew and the Duke and Duchess of Kent, while military bands played a selection of music during the afternoon.

Speaking after the visit, Tony said: “It was mind-blowingly brilliant, just incredible. I’ve never seen so many people in uniforms, dignitaries and people dressed in morning suits and top hats; it was a great spectacle. It was such a special day and one of those things you’ll never do again in a lifetime.”
