Research on show in Parliament

Kate Newton presents her poster to judges

Published: Monday 29 February 2016

Two former B&FC students had the honour of sharing their undergraduate research with top politicians in Westminster.

Kate Newton and Adrian Brooks were invited to present at the annual Posters In Parliament competition, using elements of their dissertations to demonstrate key messages to MPs and higher education policy-makers.

Kate, a project management graduate who works in the NHS, themed her poster around change management success factors and how they could be applied to the NHS.

She was shortlisted in the final nine and commented: “It was absolutely amazing to go to Parliament and even more so to be shortlisted. It wasn’t easy studying part time for five years while working full time and raising three children, but it felt worthwhile after this.”

Adrian, who also completed a project management degree and works for BAE Systems, focused on the importance of public relations in public sector project management.

He said: “It was a great afternoon. I was pleased with how well the people I spoke to grasped the ideas in my work and offered their personal opinions on the topic. I then found it interesting to talk to other students about their posters with studies ranging from treating knee pain in young adults to the heart development of zebra fish.”

The competition was organised by UCLan to showcase the best of undergraduate research to politicians and inspire others to undertake their own research.
