Taxi Driver Maurice on Course for Success

Published: Sunday 27 July 2008

Blackpool has a new taxi service on its roads and Blackpool and The Fylde College has played a major part in its creation. Taxi driver Maurice Myers recently completed the NVQ Level 2 in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving at Blackpool and The Fylde College and has realised his dream of owning his own taxi company by launching Go Cabs, which he describes as a ‘bespoke, individual taxi service.’

A Hackney Cab driver for more than six years, 58 year-old Maurice was asked at the start of the course what his future goals were. “It has been my dream to own and run my own taxi service and now I am and the course played a major factor in my decision to start my business.

“The course gave me the confidence to take the plunge even this late in my working career to form my own company. I would encourage all existing and potential taxi drivers to enrol on the course as the standard of teaching and the content of the course was excellent. I have heard one or two comments from people questioning why experienced drivers should enrol on a course at college but I learnt many things that I didn’t know before and I believe my driving skills in areas such as hazard perception, have greatly improved. I have a greater awareness of the dangers of the road while driving a taxi and my passengers can only benefit from that.’

John Swannie; Curriculum Manager of the school of Tourism Leisure and Hospitality at Blackpool and The Fylde College said: “One of the key components of the course is Customer Service - very often the taxi driver can be the first and last contact that a visitor to Blackpool might have. Excellence in customer service is also one of the key drivers of Blackpool's regeneration strategy and when achieved, will enhance the visitor experience
