National College Announcement Drives Surge in Demand for Engineering Courses

Published: Monday 24 November 2014

Blackpool and The Fylde College has added extra Engineering courses to meet unprecedented demand since being announced as the hub for the National College for Onshore Oil and Gas.

Michael Coleman, Head of School for Engineering and Computing said: “On the day of the announcement, we filled an entire course in just two-and-a-half hours at our Open Day. Our contact centre also experienced a high volume of calls from people interested in training for a career in the energy industry. As a result, we’ve added a 90 Credit Engineering Diploma and HNCs in Electrical Engineering, General Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, starting in January 2015.

“These courses provide the core engineering skills required for progression paths into the energy sector, including traditional oil and gas, renewable and low-carbon energy generation and onshore oil and gas.”

The National College is being set up by representative body UKOOG (UK Onshore Operators Group) to meet the industry’s future skills needs and help the UK to become an international centre of excellence for onshore operations.

The news was announced by the Rt Hon Matthew Hancock MP, Minister of State for Business and Enterprise and Minister of State for Energy as he visited B&FC on 12 November.

The courses are open to anyone interested in learning core engineering skills. There are no entry criteria for the 90 Credit Diploma, which will allow progression to the HNC programmes upon completion. For more information, contact course enquiries on 01253 504343 or visit www.blackpool.ac.uk
