College First to Gain Chartered Status

Blackpool and The Fylde College has today achieved Chartered Institute Status for Further Education.

The College, alongside Hawk Management (UK) Ltd and Bridgwater College, has become the first college in the UK to gain membership of the Institution.

The Chartered Institution for Further Education (CIFE) is a new membership body for the higher performing FE colleges and training providers in the UK. Its mission is to bring together the best training providers across the sector and collectively to promote, recognise and celebrate their professionalism and success.

Lord Lingfield, Chairman of the Chartered Institution for Further Education, today announced the achievement of the chartered status saying:

“I am very pleased to welcome in the first members of the Institution. The new members have all passed a rigorous process which has confirmed their position as leading performers in the sector. I look forward to working with them to begin driving forward professionalism in further education. We need to start recognising and celebrating what the sector does well, and aim towards achieving for this sector a status both nationally and internationally equivalent to that enjoyed by our higher education colleagues.”

Bev Robinson, Principal and Chief Executive at Blackpool and The Fylde College said: ““We are delighted to be amongst the first three FE colleges in the UK to be recognised in this way. This accolade distinguishes us as leading training provider, recognising the outstanding outcomes we achieve working in partnership with employers, students and other stakeholders in the community.”

Patrick Hayton, Company Director of wholesaler Midland Fish, added: “This is a fantastic achievement for Blackpool and Fylde College. We have been working closely with them and understand first-hand how they work with businesses to address skills shortages. We are excited at the prospect of recruiting new young local people, and giving them a chance to learn and create new job opportunities in the town’s fishing industry.”

The institution aims to raise standards in the sector by offering an indicator of whole-organisation quality which goes beyond formal QA and appraisal mechanisms. As a member of the Institution the College remains highly committed to developing models of best practice and continuously seeking ways to improve teaching and learning as well as governance.
