Rocking All Over the UK

Published: Thursday 21 May 2009

A group of talented musicians from Blackpool and the Fylde College are set to rock their way to the top as they get ready to compete in Battle of the Bands 2009, the national final of the WorldSkills UK Popular Music competition.

Year one National Diploma in Music students Joe Coleman, Charlie Richards, Rob Goodison, Jake Anderson and Lewis Gilbert, all aged 17-19, make up rock band ‘Papa Toure’. The boys met at College and started work on their set after being placed together by Tutor, Chris Parsonage.

They wowed industry experts and judges in the semi finals last month with their roof-raising renditions of the classic ‘Money for Nothing’ by Dire Straits and jazz rock band Steely Dan’s ‘Reelin’ in the Years’.

Having qualified as one of the top ten acts in the UK, the band now take on the best of Britain in the hope of gaining a medal and the industry recognition attached to the renowned event, which enables competitors to develop and put into practice a variety of skills that are required to be a working musician.

The rhythmic five will be assessed on a number of criteria including their musicality, technical accuracy and difficulty, professionalism, dynamics and communication as well as their overall performance and showmanship. They hope the long hours of rehearsals will impress the panel when they take to the stage on Friday at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College in the West Midlands.

The group have been working with Chris to perfect their act, and he is clearly impressed with their performance:

“I’m so proud of the students. They’ve worked really hard and beaten off tough competition to reach the final through excellent technical skills and brilliant teamwork.
“These students are still in their first year which just shows what a high standard of learners we attract here at the College and how much can be achieved in a short space of time. They are going to get better and better and I’m sure they’re destined for great things when they finish the course.
“I wish them the very best of luck for the Final on Friday.”

Drummer Rob Goodison (17) added:

”It’s looking to be one of the best days of my performing career. We think that we’re in with a great chance – it’s going to be a great day.”

Blackpool and the Fylde College is currently expanding its range of Musical offerings to include a Music Technology course. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact Course Enquiries on 01253 504343.
