Maritime Student Wins Top Award

Published: Monday 20 October 2014

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency awarded student Jonty Turnbull Cadet of the Year. Blackpool and the Fylde College students are no stranger to winning awards having scooped this particular award an amazing seven times out of eight years the awards have run.

Jonty who is Cadet of the Year 2013-14 studied at Fleetwood Nautical Campus of Blackpool and the Fylde College. He has an exciting sailing history starting out back in 2010 when he sailed a yacht around Athens shortly followed by extensive sailing trips around the Mediterranean. He then went on to sail passages across the Caribbean as well as sailing to Mexico and San Francisco. All these trips served to further increase his interest in becoming a professional Merchant Navy Officer.

Jonty said:

"I decided that applying for a cadetship and being trained in the British Merchant Navy was the best way to achieve my goals, due to it having an enviable reputation around the world for producing some of the best trained officers afloat."

He adds: "It's a great honour to receive this award; it is in no small part a result of the efforts of the crews of the vessels I sailed on, the staff at Blackpool and the Fylde Nautical College and Bibby Ship Management."

Staff at Blackpool and the Fylde Nautical College couldn't be happier for Jonty. Jonathan Ward Curriculum Leader said:

"I am pleased and honoured that the awarding body has considered Jonty Turnbull as Cadet of the Year, he has demonstrated dedication in all aspects of his professional career in the Merchant Navy. He displays all the attributes we consider important for the future of our young Officer Cadets."

Neil Atkinson, Head of Fleetwood Nautical Campus added:

"I am delighted that Jonty has continued the seafaring tradition that a cadet from Fleetwood Nautical Campus has won this award. Congratulations to him along with all of the staff from Fleetwood Nautical Campus, his Company Training Officer  and the Officers at sea who have all been involved with his training, they have all contributed to this success.”

Jonty is studying the Foundation Degree in Nautical Science. For more details about becoming a Deck Cadet with Blackpool and The Fylde College, click here.
