Outstanding achievement and success have been celebrated by Blackpool and The Fylde College at the annual Student of the Year awards.

More than 300 guests gathered at Blackpool Pleasure Beach to see 18 awards presented to exceptional students, who had been nominated by their tutors.

Young Student of the Year was Christian Railton from Cleveleys. Having suffered a stroke four years ago, the 18-year-old juggled speech therapy and physiotherapy appointments while he completed his business studies diploma. He also found time to serve as a student representative and raise money for a number of charities.

After graduating this summer, he is heading for Durham University to start a degree in accounting and finance.

Christian said: “It was amazing to win, not what I was expecting at all. My mum and dad are so proud. I have enjoyed being at B&FC and I’ve definitely grown in confidence while I’ve been studying here”

His tutor Sally Dixon commented: “Chris is a quiet and humble student and has been an excellent role model for his peers. He has worked very hard to achieve his grades and has been a pleasure to tutor.”

Other winners included Julie Agnew, who was declared Adult Student of the Year. The 31-year-old from Fleetwood returned to education to complete a photography diploma and she is now progressing up to B&FC’s University Centre to study for a degree in September.

She said: “It doesn’t seem real. B&FC took a chance on me: I didn’t have any qualifications and now I have a distinction and a Student of the Year award, which is a fantastic achievement. I can’t thank the college enough.”

Congratulating all the winners and nominees, Bev Robinson, Principal and Chief Executive of B&FC, said: “The Student of the Year awards are an important occasion in the College calendar. We get the chance to reflect on the commitment and dedication the students have shown in fulfilling their educational goals and to celebrate their exceptional individual achievements.”
