Blackpool and The Fylde College gets Ready to Rally

Published: Friday 19 December 2014

A team from Blackpool and The Fylde College is set to make its debut at the prestigious North West Stages Rally in 2015 after the Lancashire-based College adapted a BMW Mini to meet Motor Sports Association (MSA) standards.

The investment means the College’s sought after Motorsport and Automotive programmes now have the unique capability to integrate rally, formula and engine technology and design into the curriculum.

Paul Higham, Manager in the School of Engineering and Computing said: “This is a massive opportunity for students. We’ve had some of our students helping to rebuild the car to get it race ready while others have been involved in the testing process. We’ve also had the car branded to try and target new audiences; it’s unusual to see a Mini at a rally event but we’ve chosen to push the boundaries to showcase our capabilities.

“We’re one of only two Ofsted Outstanding Engineering departments in the UK and have recently started working with Mahle Powertrain to give our students a real competitive edge in securing the top graduate careers. This new stream of learning will further enhance the reputation of our courses and place us as the leading provider of both college and degree level courses for this competitive industry.”

The rally car is the latest investment in the automotive provision at Blackpool and The Fylde College – it is currently building an £8.2 million Advanced Technology Centre, due to open in autumn 2015, which will house the latest equipment and technology including a complete suite of dyno testing facilities comprising of a four-wheel drive, rolling road, engine testing and manufacturing centre.

The College has enlisted driver Mark Holmes, who competes at World Championship level, to represent team B&FC in the rally and are hoping for a strong finish when the three day event takes place in February next year.
