The cream of the UK’s shipping industry once again attended Blackpool and The Fylde College’s Maritime Careers Open Day.

Representatives from 16 major national shipping companies met prospective cadets to talk to them about careers at sea and training opportunities. The event took place at the College’s internationally renowned Fleetwood Nautical Campus, which trains the next generation of officers and engineers.

Almost 400 young people attended the Open Day and, in addition to getting advice and guidance from companies, they were able to experience the hi-tech training facilities at the College which include ship bridge and engine room simulators.

Neil Atkinson, Head of Fleetwood Nautical Campus said: “Our Maritime Careers Open Day was yet another successful event with positive feedback from the shipping companies in attendance. It was refreshing to see so many young people interested in a career in the merchant navy, many of them from the local area.”

Aspiring cadets will now be invited to follow up interviews with shipping companies before successful candidates are placed onto relevant maritime courses.
