Results day: advice for students

Published: Thursday 18 August 2016

You’ve worked hard for the last few years and as you open up your envelope on results day, the most important thing to remember is not to panic – especially if your results are different to what you were expecting.

Here’s some practical advice from our Careers and Employability team if your results weren’t what you expected, or if you’re unsure of your next steps.

My results are better than expected

The big decision is whether to stick with your original university course choice or look for something else.  If you decide to look at other options you have five working days to use ‘Adjustment’ via UCAS Track.  This allows you to look at courses that have higher entry requirements and make contact with them.

My results are worse than expected

There is always a plan B and in some cases even a plan C, D and E. First of all, check your UCAS Track account to see what universities / colleges have actually offered you. Even if your results don’t meet the entry requirements of your chosen course you may still have been offered a place or a suitable alternative.

If you haven’t been offered something, there will be plenty of degree and foundation degree options in Clearing, offered by other institutions including Blackpool and The Fylde College.  The full list is available on the UCAS website (www.ucas.com) and you can speak to the Exam Results Hotline on 0808 100 8000.  If you wish to add a Clearing choice you will be able to do so from 3 pm on 18 August, allowing you time to research your options.

You may also want to consider doing another level 3 course for a year to build up your UCAS points and then reapplying for university. Speak to the Careers Team about your options on 01253 504474.

I’m unsure what to do next

Don’t worry, there will be lots of other students in the exact same position on results day. There are a variety of options, including apprenticeships, other courses, a gap year or higher education.  It is important that you take time to consider your options and make sure you pick something that is right for you.

Career Advice is just a click or a call away, search online for the National Career Service, attend our sign up events or call B&FC on 01253 504343 to enquire about courses.
