B&FC students help mums get motivated

Blackpool mums are enjoying a real boost to their fitness and mood thanks to the efforts of two students from Blackpool and The Fylde College.

Sarah Noblet and Sarah Thompson are driving forward What Women Want, a scheme to provide free activity sessions in all five children’s centres, based on what the mums themselves have asked for.

The pair, in their second year of sports development degrees, were doing some voluntary work for Blackpool Council when they were invited to be ambassadors for the new project, funded by Sport England’s Sportivate programme. It has meant a great deal of work discovering what activities would get women motivated and then sourcing appropriate instructors, but the results have proved worthwhile.

Now each centre has a weekly timetable of classes that include zumba, fencing, boxing and table tennis, while an online community is being built up on Facebook.

Sarah Thompson commented: “This has been an amazing experience for us. We’ve had to overcome a few barriers and ideas like bike rides out have had to be shelved because of child care issues, but  we are so encouraged at the way things have taken off.

“Our tutors have been amazingly supportive throughout the whole project, especially at first when we were struggling to get the women involved.”

Sarah Noblet added: “The most rewarding part has being seeing the women’s moods lift so much after each session and watching them get fitter. On a personal level it has convinced me that I want to go into this kind of community work when I graduate. I’d love to get involved in setting up sports projects and motivating others to take it over themselves.”
