College student’s research goes global

Published: Monday 12 September 2016

A Blackpool and The Fylde College (B&FC) graduate has been invited to present his undergraduate research to a global audience.

Matthew Cornes graduated with first class honours BSc (Hons) degree in Project Management in July. He will attend the inaugural World Congress on Undergraduate Research (WCUR) at Qatar University, Doha, on November 13-15, 2016 and present his work to peers, faculty, and staff from around the world.

Matthew worked at BAE Systems, Samlesbury throughout his studies and as a result was able to apply his research in a commercial environment, one of the strengths of college-based higher education. His dissertation – ‘The impact technological development has had on customer expectations in Project Management’ – has already been noted by peers in the United Kingdom when he presented his abstract at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research in March at Manchester Metropolitan University.

The WCUR aims to bring together the best undergraduate research in the world and to focus collectively on some of the most significant challenges facing the global community today. Organisers noted that Matthew’s abstract demonstrated a unique contribution to his field of study.

Commenting on the accolade, Matthew said:

“It was a very proud moment to hear that my abstract had been accepted for presentation at the World Congress on Undergraduate Research. This event is a unique opportunity which will provide great experience for my career going forward. It is great that students, who are working alongside studying, are given the opportunity by Blackpool and The Fylde College and BAE Systems to be able research into their profession whilst also being able to apply this knowledge in parallel with undertaking a Project Management role. I would like to thank the staff at Blackpool and the Fylde College as well as my employer BAE Systems for providing the support which has allowed me to be involved with this prestigious event.”

Cheryl Dunn, Vice Principal HE and Student Enhancement at Blackpool and The Fylde College added:

“I’d like to congratulate Matthew and the staff who have supported him with this work. I’m especially pleased that the invitation comes just months after the College was awarded a prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Further and Higher Education for our nationally acclaimed project management degree. Matthew’s selection further reinforces our reputation as a leading provider of employer focussed technical and vocational education.”

The BSc (Hons) in Project Management has been written in close consultation with BAE Systems to ensure graduates complete not only with expert subject knowledge but also with skills that are desired and directly relevant to their future employment.
