VIDEO: King of the superbikes zooms into Blackpool

Published: Friday 11 December 2015

Carl Fogarty sped full throttle into Blackpool and The Fylde College today to experience some of the amazing engineering and automotive facilities at students’ disposal.

The world superbike legend took a behind-the-scenes look at the College’s new Advanced Technology Centre (ATC), home to the latest cutting edge equipment found in the advanced engineering and manufacturing industries.

What particularly caught his eye was the four-wheel drive chassis dynamometer, where he climbed behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 and clocked a top speed of 202mph.

There was also time for a question and answer session with 100 or so local schoolchildren interested in engineering and science who had been invited to see the facilities for themselves and meet the motorsport legend.

And his verdict? “I’ve seen a few of these technology centres over the past ten years and this is by far the biggest and best, it really is impressive. When I was at college back in the early 80s there was nothing like this. There’s more incentive for kids to learn more when they have such great facilities.”

Paul Higham, Manager of the School of Engineering at Blackpool and The Fylde College, said: “A big thank you to Carl for his enthusiasm and support. He described the ATC as ”incredible”, which endorses our investment in industry-leading facilities capable of providing higher technical and professional training.

“Some of the things our students can access throughout their learning include automotive workshops with the same equipment used by industry giants such as Audi and Ford, a highly advanced materials and paint applications centre, advanced robotic cells, pneumatics and hydraulics.

“We’ve even got a reverse engineering facility that allows a product to be scanned and drawn to explore alternative manufacturing techniques.

“It was also encouraging to hear such positive feedback from the schoolchildren who visited. These are the engineers of tomorrow and anything we can do to make sure their interest in the subject continues is incredibly exciting.”
