TV writers endorse unique new scriptwriting degree

Published: Wednesday 9 March 2016

Don’t panic – budding scriptwriters are far from doomed thanks to a unique new degree programme being delivered at Blackpool and The Fylde College, which has been endorsed by a stream of top TV writers.

Heading the list is Stephen Russell, whose writing credits include Coronation Street, Peaky Blinders, Shameless and most recently We’re Doomed: The Dad’s Army Story that pulled in 2.7m viewers when it was shown over Christmas.

The degree – BA (Hons) in Scriptwriting for Stage, Screen & Gaming – is unique in that it brings the three fields together in a single programme. For the first time it combines writing for film, television, gaming and theatre, equipping graduates with adaptable and industry-specific skills .

Commenting on the programme proposal, Stephen’s feedback reads:

“The number of opportunities for writers has been increasing in recent years and anyone with an interesting sample script has a good chance of being employed. However, it’s no use being employed once. You also have to know what’s expected of you after the script has been written and this course would appear to be an excellent grounding for that. It’s a solitary job that requires regular enthusiastic collaboration and the degree recognises that. This is the kind of course I would like to take if I was starting out now.”

Other writers to praise the study content include graphic novelist Dr Christopher Dows, who called it “an exciting and innovative programme” and filmmaker Dr Freddie Gaffney who has further been involved in shaping the degree. He commented: “I particularly like the inclusion of a unit on Adaptation – certainly a key area for film and TV and one that is equally important to the stage.”

Applications are now invited for a September 2016 start. See our programme page for more details.
