Hands-on marathon experience for B&FC students

Published: Friday 6 May 2016

Runners in Sunday’s London Marathon had their tired legs and sore muscles tended to by sports massage students from Blackpool and The Fylde College.

The nine-strong team and their course tutor headed to the capital to volunteer with the Teenage Cancer Trust, providing post-race treatment for the 100 or so people racing in aid of that particular charity.

Some of the runners were cancer survivors, others had lost a teenage friend or family member to the disease, but all provided real-time massage experience outside of the usual classroom experience.

The groups also met a number of athletes including Steve Cram, Allison Curbishley, Shelly Woods and Lord Coe.

Tutor Brian Porter said:

“I am very proud of all the students. Their interaction with the athletes was first class. They worked incredibly hard and with great enthusiasm. They have all greatly developed their massage skills and confidence in a very busy environment."

Student Priesley Duffy added

“It was an honour to be part of such a wonderful organisation and to meet so many inspirational people running for Teenage Cancer Trust.”
