Students Speed into National Cross Country Finals

Published: Wednesday 4 November 2015

Two students from Blackpool and The Fylde College have qualified for the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport National Finals.

Jess Rogers, 16, studying a Level 3 90 Credit Diploma in Sport and Jake Walley, 18, working towards a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care, both competed at the Aoc Sport North West Regional Cross Country Championships at Witton Park in Blackburn.

The top eight finishers in each race qualified to represent Team North West at the 2016 National Championships to be hosted across Newcastle, Sunderland and Gateshead from 15-17 April, in partnership with Tyne & Wear Sport.

It was Jess' first year at the competition and she finished in a very respectable 5th place amongst a strong field of runners.

Jake represented the College at National Championships last year, finishing in the top 10 and helping the North West Men's Cross Country team to a bronze medal. He did even better at Regionals this year, finishing very comfortably in first place, and hopes to improve his standing at the finals in April.

The college sport National Championships is one of the largest annual sporting events in England, involving over 1,800 college students and 200 staff. Students from Blackpool and The Fylde College will be competing in regional qualifiers in a number of other disciplines over the coming term in a bid to send more students to the Finals.
