Build Up Featured as Ofsted Good Practice Resource

Published: Tuesday 6 May 2014

Ofsted has used Blackpool and The Fylde College as an example of best practice to share throughout the education sector.

The college has been profiled for its successful Build Up project, a training initiative that enables learners to develop employability skills within the construction industry. It comes just months after B&FC was judged Outstanding by Ofsted across each of the main areas after a full inspection.

Under the heading ‘Employability courses designed to meet local skills shortages’, the official education inspection body published a six page best practice guide which looks at the project background, how the centre reduces barriers for potential learners, develops employability skills and sets high standards, how it became employers’ preferred option for recruitment and planned future developments including relocating to a new, larger site.

The case study says:

  • Build Up… enables learners to develop effective employability skills within the construction industry. Learners develop an appropriate work ethic, which is valued by employers who use ‘Build Up’ as their first choice to look for potential employees. Learners have real opportunities to gain sustained employment on local regeneration projects.

It also features quotes from local employers, students who have had their lives turned around by the programme and centre manager Roberta Austin, who points out that many students progress onto the college’s apprenticeships or supervisory roles within their employment.

Daryl Platt, Executive Director of Commercial Development at Blackpool and The Fylde College, said: “Build Up has exceeded all expectations and its success over the past six years is unprecedented. It’s fitting that Ofsted have published the good practice guide just as Build Up placed its 3,500th student into employment.”

The good practice case studies that Ofsted publishes highlight specific examples of practice that providers of education, learning and children’s services have used to achieve successful outcomes. The full case study can be viewed at https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/ofsted .
