Jobs - What's It Like?

At Blackpool and The Fylde College we believe that staff are our key resource. We don’t just say that, we show it. If you work for us you will receive a competitive salary and the chance to join either the Teachers’ Pension Scheme or the Local Government Pension Scheme. Both of these are final year pension schemes and the College pays additional contributions to them in addition to your contributions.

Employment here at the College places our learners and customers at the heart of all that we do. We want all our staff to be professionally qualified and committed to continuous professional development. Our lecturing staff will either be qualified with a Certificate in Education or will achieve one shortly into their employment.

All staff will, during their probationary year, take part in a College induction programme including three separate courses on Equality, Customer Care and Health and Safety. Additionally, new staff are given a mentor who is an experienced fellow member of staff and who will help you settle into working life at the College.

College managers work hard with our three recognised trade unions (UCU, UNISON and ACM) to ensure that we remain one of the best local employers and one of the best employers in the further education sector. At the College we employ our own staff. We believe that commitment and quality come from being part of the team.

Staff receive a generous annual leave entitlement. Lecturers receive 42 days annually, new managers receive 35 days and Business Support staff receive 30 days per year. In addition to this allocation, there are 5 efficiency days when the College closes over the Christmas period and 8 bank holidays.

There are many other favourable aspects to Contracts of Employment here, including beyond statutory minimum allowances for maternity pay, a generous leave of absence scheme and many staff development opportunities.

The College has achieved and is committed to maintaining Investors in People status and has an outstanding record for training and developing staff. In order to assist colleagues to achieve success, the College operates an annual Staff Development Review to identify training and development needs as well as an annual Performance Review based on personal targets derived from the College’s strategic objectives.

The College’s commitment to equality is expressed in our Equality Charter: ‘Blackpool and The Fylde College is committed to equality in all its activities for those who learn and work here and will respect differences in race and ethnic origin, gender, disability, mental health, sexual orientation, age, religion and belief, additional learning, economic and social need’.

What is expected in return for these outstanding conditions of service? Full-time lecturers teach for 886 hours a year and all full-time staff work a 37 hour working week. We expect all our staff to be passionate about their work and committed to our continuing success. Passionate about education and understanding that high quality teaching and learning is central to our success! Passionate about making a difference and contributing to our success!
