Planning your Finances

More Money

Ensuring you have sufficient money to cover all expenses whilst studying in the UK is important not only in terms of obtaining your student visa, but also giving you peace of mind. A good starting point is to contact your own Ministry of Education or Education Department as they will have details of scholarship opportunities for students wishing to study overseas, and will be able to advise you on your own Governments conditions for studying abroad.

Your local British Council will have information on any British scholarship schemes that you could apply for as well as information about; educational and training courses, living in the UK, and how much it costs to study. If there is not a local British Council office you could contact your nearest British Embassy or High Commission.

Have a look at the Education UK website www.educationuk.org for more information about planning your finances. The British Council also have an on-line budget planner which will help you plan your finances in advance & to ensure you have enough money to study in the UK, www.educationuk.org/budgetplanner.

The British Council have produced a detailed guide Sources of funding for international students which provides lots of useful information on a variety of topics and provides answers to your questions about the possibility of financial support

It is important that you DO NOT travel to the UK, resign from any current employment or begin a course of study without making sure you have enough money to cover all of your academic fees and living expenses. It is virtually impossible to make arrangements for financial support once you have left your own country. The immigration authorities are also unlikely to let you enter the UK unless you have sufficient evidence to show that you can cover the costs of your proposed study.

Scholarships

The College will offer a £250 scholarship to all students who have already achieved IELTS 7.0 (or equivalent) or above at the time of enrolment. Proof of this level of English is required and should be in the form of a valid certificate. Some agents may offer additional scholarships for students applying for specific courses. Please refer to the International Agents section of the website for more details.

British Council IELTS Scholarship Launched in South Korea, India, Vietnam and Taiwan

IELTS have announced the 2010 launch of the British Council IELTS Scholarship in South Korea, India, Vietnam and Taiwan. The scholarship is aimed at those intending to study at universities overseas at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Eligible applicants will have an IELTS test score. IELTS, the world's leading English language test, provides a reliable assessment of each student's ability to cope with the academic English standards expected by their intended overseas university programme.

Award winners will begin an undergraduate or postgraduate programme at any overseas university which uses IELTS as part of its admission requirements. Because IELTS is accepted by over 6,000 institutions in 135 countries worldwide, university choice is wide, with favourite destinations for IELTS candidates being Australia, UK and USA.
