Alumnus interview:

Nick Corless – Foundation Degree in Project Management

nick_corless.jpgI was working at BAE Systems and they have a close relationship with the College. The company chose Blackpool and The Fylde College, supported by Lancaster University, as the facilitator for the degree due to is proximity to the main working sites and the tailored project management course they offered to deliver. It was good for me as it’s close to where I live too.

I found the teaching on the degree really innovative. The tutors used various teaching styles such as team based scenarios, discussions, video, role play, pod casts and presentations. The use of different media types, both conventional and not so conventional, helped engage us as learners and allowed us to broaden our ideas about how research information can be obtained.

I was able to develop advanced writing skills specific to degree-level assignments and essays during the course. This also helped me to develop key career skills such as effectively composing arguments and structuring detailed studies. Additionally, carrying out presentation assignments helped me develop expertise essential to the workplace.

On a typical day I’m monitoring and analysing project performance in terms of cost and time. To work in Project Management you need effective communication skills, pragmatic decision-making and good stakeholder management. The things I’ve learnt at College are definitely applicable in the workplace.
