Philip Bates - BEng (Hons) Mechanical and Production Engineering

phil_bates.jpgI studied further education at the College and I found the atmosphere relaxed, while encouraging you to learn. I wanted to continue onto higher education and doing so at the College was natural a progression I was happy to follow.

The College had all the facilities on site to enable me to learn. The tutor’s were always available by telephone or email and I found this support network extremely useful. The tutors knowledge of the subject was great – they had ‘been there and done it’ which made the course content relevant to industry.

The College recommended me to my current employer when they requested apprentice designers. I completed my NVQ and continued to work with Addison Project throughout my study.

To be a designer, you need an eye for detail, a good principle of spatial awareness to ensure you can visualise the new design in place and a good imagination helps! I design 3D and 2D pipework and visit our client’s sites on a regular basis. It’s really varied - some days I could be working with low hazard fluids like water and nitrogen and other days I could be dealing with 26 Bar High Pressure Steam and Hydrochloric Acid.

College was challenging yet rewarding. The tutors have even inspired me to consider returning to teach part-time in the future to give something back to the 80 College that has given me so much.
