About this Course:

This programme is validated by Lancaster University and is delivered by Blackpool and the Fylde College. The College has a long established and successful association with Lancaster University.

The Foundation Degree is a new qualification that combines a practical approach with degree-level academic study. The Foundation Degree is a qualification in its own right, entitling successful students to describe themselves as Foundation Graduates. The course provides underpinning knowledge for students wishing to develop their career potential. It is an ideal programme for those returning to education after a long period away from studying; as the course ethos is encouraging and nurturing for its students; allowing time for re-adjustment back into academic studying and achievement.

This programme recognises the growing importance and role which Travel and Tourism is playing in economic and social development throughout the UK, and globally. The programme is aimed at candidates who have the motivation, attitude and drive to develop a career in Travel and Tourism Management. A principle influencing factor is the need for professionals to acquire a deep understanding and an affinity for the concepts and demands of the industry and its customers. Hence, it is anticipated that successful graduates from this programme will experience few difficulties in securing appropriate employment. For those who go on to study at honours level the prospects are even brighter.

Assessment Methods:

There will be a wide variety of assessment processes, including the traditional academic (essays, reports and time constrained tests), as well as innovative projects, workshops and on-line activities. By definition, the assessment of foundation degrees will reflect industrial needs.

Progression:

This qualification will provide the students with the skills and knowledge to become managers in the travel and tourism industry. The Foundation Degree graduates, subject to the achievement of suitable grades, have the option to top-up their qualification to our established BA (Hons) International Resort Tourism Management qualification.

Special Features:

The programme will focus on the acquisition of technical and transferable skills in addition to the development of intellectual and academic aptitude. Even though this is a full time course the timetable has been designed to ensure that the student usually only needs to attend college for one day per week.

The course lasts for 2 years. There are 16 modules on the course, these include:

  • Introduction to Tourism
  • Organisational Behaviour

Teaching Methods:

A variety of teaching methods are used including; lectures, seminars, industrial visits and visiting industrial speakers. One day (nine hours) per week is spent in college but the student is expected to work independently in addition to this. The college is proud of its staffs' open door policy whereby students can contact staff and generally are not required to make appointments to do so.

Skills Developed:

The programme will develop the communication, problem solving and organisational skills that are essential for a successful manager to have, coupled with an opportunity to develop up to date I.T. skills.
