About this Course:

The Foundation Degree in Sports Development is a vocationally based qualification that offers the student an innovative introduction to the concept of sports provision within the community.

Assessment Methods:

All aspects of the coaching process will be examined with students being given the opportunity to enhance their skills both practically and theoretically. There will be opportunities to gain a raft of national governing body recognised coaching qualifications in the science and practice of coaching.

Progression:

Graduates of the Foundation Degree in Sports Development will be well placed to convert their foundation degree into a BA (Hons) top-up degree in Sports Development with the College. Alternatively, you may wish to take up employment in areas such as community sports development, community based coaching, clinical exercise and rehabilitation or the fitness/leisure industry.

Special Features:

There is a growing demand for more and better qualified sports practitioners and administrators in all areas of community based sports provision within the UK. This course offers the individual the opportunity to gain sound background knowledge in all aspects of sports development.

Course Options:

The course is made up of 16 modules of work 8 modules per year. The course may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis, and typically takes 2 years to complete (or an equivalent pro-rata time for part timers).

Coaching Skills Modules: Activity Leadership, The Coaching Process at Level 1 and Coaching Children, The Theory and Practice of Coach Training at Level 2.

Physiology and Health Modules: Performance Physiology, Fitness for Sport at Level 1 and Health and Wellness and Treatment of Injuries at Level 2.

Sports Concepts: The Culture of Sport, Community Sports Development at Level 1 and Ethical Issues in Sport, Policy and Planning for Sport at Level 2.

Industrial Links: Research Methods in the Workplace, The Sport and Leisure Industry at Level 1 and Project Analysis in the Sports Industry, Contemporary Issues in Sport at Level 2.

Teaching Methods:

Although the aim is to provide a wide range of teaching and learning experiences, primary focus will be on lectures, seminars, discussions and tutorials during which students will be encouraged to progressively develop their analytical and critical abilities. Modules will make appropriate use of industrial visits, visiting speakers, presentations and technology. This mix of practical, theoretical and intellectual development will enable each student to recognise and demonstrate personal strengths. Students will be encouraged to become independent learners with appropriate study skills and an increasing ability to apply research skills within the vocational setting.

Skills Developed:

Graduates of the course will be qualified to undertake community based sports provision which includes multi-games coaching and an ability to work within the UK Coaching Certificate scheme at levels 1 and 2.

Providing you meet the criteria, you can then apply for your course. Full-time applications go through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), although foundation degree graduates progressing to a relevant top-up programme can (subject to certain criteria) apply to the College direct.
