Progression:

Graduates of the BA (Hons) Sports Development degree are well placed to take up a rich variety of careers within our local community. Past students have gained employment within both the public and private sectors of the sport and leisure industry. Exit surveys suggest that students are currently employed in local community sports development, community based coaching, school PESSCL initiatives, and the fitness/leisure centre industry.

Special Features:

There is a growing demand for more and better qualified sports practitioners and administrators in all areas of community based sports provision within the UK. This course offers the individual the opportunity to gain practical experience of the role sports development is playing within our local communities. You will explore a wide range of sports provision from schemes designed to take sport to disadvantaged groups to the provision of organised games and leisure activities.

Course Options:

The Dissertation is a major individual, research-based module designed to provide an opportunity for students to pursue an in-depth study of their own choice. The dissertation is viewed as a module, which adds an extra element of individual study choice to the programme, and one which will allow the student ample opportunity to demonstrate their academic skills and abilities at Honours level.

The Consultancy Studies module is designed to provide students with an opportunity to address issues of genuine industrial concern, which require a range of research and problem solving skills. This activity will facilitate a degree of integration within the programme as a whole as it calls for students to combine and apply both prior and concurrent learning to the problems encountered in this module. Working in small teams students will undertake a 'live' consultancy, which will require a detailed investigation and the production of a professional report for the client.

The module Strategic Developments in Sports Provision and Planning examines the role of the Public, Private and Voluntary Sectors in the provision of sport within the UK. It will explore the relationship of sector provision to that of the concept of 'Sport for All'. The structure of sports provision will be examined in terms of a continuum of development from mass participation through to excellence. The provision and planning of sport will be examined in terms of the strategic aims and objectives of both Public and Private sector initiatives. The Government's 'Framework for Sport' (Sport England, 2004) will be examined in terms of its emphasis upon enhancing international success and the hosting of 'mega' sporting events.

The module Social Policies and Sports Development examines the Government's long term vision for sport and physical activity to encourage a 'mass participation culture' (Department of Culture Media and Sport, 2002). The concepts of 'equity' and 'inclusion' will be examined through an examination of the provision of sport and physical activity in schools' and through the role and function of local leisure service providers.

Teaching Methods:

Although the aim is to provide a wide range of teaching and learning experiences, primary focus will be on lectures, seminars, discussions and tutorials during which students will be encouraged to progressively develop their analytical and critical abilities. Modules will make appropriate use of industrial visits, visiting speakers, presentations and technology. This mix of practical, theoretical and intellectual development will enable each student to recognise and demonstrate personal strengths. Students will be encouraged to become independent learners with appropriate study skills and an increasing ability to apply research skills within the vocational setting.

Skills Developed:

Graduates of the course will be qualified to undertake community based sports provision which includes multi-games coaching and an ability to work within the UK Coaching Certificate scheme at levels 1 and 2. The BA (Hons) in Sports Development has been designed to provide a sound, multi-disciplinary, academic background for students in order to prepare them for a successful management career. The course aims to focus on the management and provision of sport opportunities by analysing key academic themes in the subject area and critically evaluating the wide range of management issues within different sectors of the sport and leisure industry.

The course is specifically designed to provide a thematic and challenging educational progression for holders of a Foundation Degree or a Higher National Diploma (HND) in a sport subject area. The course builds on the skills and strengths of holders of a Foundation Degree or HND and will enable them to achieve honours degree level performance in one year.

This programme's underlying rationale is the need to provide for the demands of local/national public and private sector organisations through the education and development of graduates who have specialised in the promotion of sport related activities.
