About this Course:

The Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching is a vocationally based qualification that offers the student an innovative approach to the art of sports coaching.

Assessment Methods:

All aspects of the coaching process will be examined with students being given the opportunity to enhance their skills both practically and theoretically. There will be opportunities to gain a raft of national governing body recognised coaching qualifications in the science and practice of coaching.

All assessments are by written assignment and the keeping of a coaching log book. Assignments are spread out throughout the year with completion dates that realistically match the level and complexity of the set task. All assessments count to the successful completion of the course with a base pass grade of 40% being required for all assignments.

Progression:

Graduates of the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching will be well placed to convert their foundation degree into a BA (Hons) top-up degree in Sports Coaching with the College. Alternatively, you may wish to take up employment in areas such as sports science support, community coaching, sports development, clinical exercise and rehabilitation or the fitness industry.

Special Features:

This course will appeal to the coach who wishes to gain their first or further coaching qualifications or to the student who wishes to gain experience within sports coaching. The structure of the course is such that students will need to bring their existing experience of coaching into the lecture room in order to develop their coaching potential.

Course Options:

The course is made up of 12 modules of work, 6 modules per year. The course may be taken on a full-time or part-time basis, and typically takes 2 years to complete (or an equivalent pro-rata time for part timers).

Coaching Skills: The Coaching Process, Analysis of Coaching Performance at Level 1 and Talent Identification, Coaching Young Elite Performers at Level 2.

Modules will make appropriate use of industrial visits, visiting speakers, presentations and technology. This mix of practical, theoretical and intellectual development will enable each student to recognise and demonstrate personal strengths. Students will be encouraged to become independent learners with appropriate study skills and an increasing ability to apply research skills within the vocational setting.

Skills Developed:

Graduates of the course will be qualified to undertake community based sports provision which includes multi-games coaching and an ability to work within the UK Coaching Certificate scheme at levels 1 and 2.
