Course Overview

This course is predominantly aimed at people already employed by the sector, who want to gain access to up-to-date knowledge and skills directly relevant to their area of work. Throughout the programme you will develop a sound understanding of the principles underpinning the role of an HSC practitioner and learn different approaches to solving problems at work. The wider social, political and economic issues related to health and social care are also covered while in the top-up year, the focus is on the development of higher supervisory level skills.

Course Entry Requirements

Level 4 Entry: Level Three qualifications in a relevant field (Typical profile would be 200 UCAS points). Level 3 vocational awards are also appropriate, as are combinations including A/S Levels or Access to HE modules.

Applicants must undertake to be actively employed in an appropriate setting in the wider health and social care sector, on either a paid or voluntary basis, within 30 days of the commencement of the course and, thereafter for a minimum of 256 hours each year (average 8 hours per week over 32 weeks).

Non-standard entrants (i.e., those who do not possess ‘A’ levels or a recognised equivalent level 3 qualification) must be able to provide evidence of a minimum of one year experience on a paid or voluntary basis. (Voluntary service should equate to a minimum of 200 hours over the past 12 calendar months). Applicants for non-standard entry will be required to demonstrate the ability to benefit from, and have prospect of successfully completing, the programme. In this connection, they may be required to demonstrate basic competencies and skills via prior experiential learning and/or such diagnostic assessment procedures as are deemed appropriate.

Level 5 Entry:

  • Successful completion of Level 4 of Foundation Degree: Professional Practice in Health & Social Care at Blackpool and The Fylde College since September 2008 with a mean average mark of 55% (Commendation) or greater
  • Successful completion of Level 4 of a commensurate programme** at Lancaster University with a mean average mark of 55% (Commendation) or greater
  • Successful completion of Level 4 of a commensurate programme** at a university or college, other than Blackpool and the Fylde, validated by Lancaster University, with a mean average mark of 55% (Commendation) or greater

2017 Entry Requirements

A new UCAS Tariff will be used for courses starting from September 2017, the new entry requirements are as follows;

A minimum of 48 UCAS points (previously 120) or equivalent from an appropriate discipline.

You will be required to be employed (paid/voluntary) in the health and social care sector within 30 days of the start of the course and thereafter for a min. of 256 hours per year (average 8 hrs per week over 32 weeks) and supply a letter of support from your employer at enrolment.

Applicants who are able to demonstrate relevant work/life skills or knowledge will also be considered on an individual basis.
