This part time course will support you to gain employment as a teaching assistant.
This qualiﬁcation provides an in-depth understanding of the knowledge and skills required when working directly with children or young people in primary, secondary or special schools.
It covers all aspects of Specialist Support including planning, delivering, and reviewing assessment strategies to support learning alongside the teacher. This course also provides knowledge on special needs support including working with children with challenging behaviour and personal, social and emotional difficulties. You will also be encouraged to develop your skills as a reflective practitioner.
This course is designed specifically for adult learners who are either already working or volunteering in a school environment in a teaching assistant role. It will support you to gain employment and/or further your teaching assistant/learning support career within either a primary, secondary or further education environment.
All classes are taught by specialist tutors with a wealth of experience in the sector. All tutors engage in regular updating of skills within the industry and research to ensure currency of practice and information.
The part time programme design means that our provision is ideal for adults wishing to embark on a career change but who have other employment or family commitments. The choice of class times is designed to accommodate family life.
Course Entry Requirements
In order to access this course the following entry requirements must be met:
- Written confirmation from a school or college (primary, secondary or further education college) that they are willing to provide you with a placement on a weekly basis for the full duration of the course.
As well as this you must also meet one of the following requirements:
- Written confirmation form a school or college that you have gained a minimum of 100 hours classroom based experience (can be over a range of placements but must all be within the last 5 years)
- The classroom experience requirement is reduced to 70 hours you also hold a Level 2 Award Support Work in Schools qualification (certificate must be produced).
The classroom experience requirement is reduced to 50 hours you also hold a Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification (certificate must be produced)
Career Options and Progression
With this qualification you will meet be able work within a classroom based environment (primary, secondary, college, specialist school or pupil referral unit), assisting with teaching and learning.
Following on from this qualification, learners will have the opportunity to progress onto a Foundation Degree in Teaching and learning support which involves attending College 1 day a week for 2 years.
Modules and Assessment
As part of this course you will study a range of mandatory modules, essential to your daily practice as a teaching assistant. These will extend and assess your knowledge base and also your practical competence within your chosen placement. These are:
- Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults (TDA 3.1)
- Schools as organisations (TDA 3.2)
- Understand child and young person development (CYP Core 3.1)
- Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people (CYP Core 3.3)
- Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour (TDA 3.4)
- Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults (TDA 3.5)
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people (TDA 3.6)
Support assessment for learning (TDA 3.7)
In order to gain your qualification you will be required to build a Portfolio of evidence. This may include completion of written tasks, posters, leaflets and training materials. You will be required to prepare tasks and activities to use within your placement that will then be observed by your assessor.
Teaching and Learning Methods
You will attend College for a 4.5 hour session each week either on a Monday evening (4.30 pm – 9 pm) or on a Thursday morning (9.45-2.15). These sessions will include group delivery and group activities and discussions with 1-1 support also provided. You will be assigned a group tutor who will support you in the collation of your written evidence and an assessor who will attend your placement and assess your competence in the workplace. It is anticipated that your assessor will conduct a minimum of 3 workplace assessments and that you will also undergo professional discussions with your assessor.
Work Placement and Field Trips
Learners are required to source their own placement prior to enrolment. This will need to be confirmed in writing at the time of enrolment. Placement commitment should be for at least 6 hours a week for the full duration of the course. Once a placement is sourced it is essential that you work with the setting to ensure that the DBS application (criminal records check) is processed with your placement as soon as possible. Your placement should not been in Reception if working in a primary school and should involve morning sessions to gain experience with the National Curriculum.
All staff involved in the delivery of adult education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant vocational and industrial experience and professional practice.
There are no other costs associated with this course.
There is no specific equipment required to complete this qualification although there is a requirement to have a weekly placement for the full duration of the course.

Regulation and Accreditation
This qualification is a QCF (Qualifications and Credits Framework) qualification. This accreditation means that it is recognised nationally as meeting relevant and appropriate standards.
