Course Overview

This programme is aimed at applicants wishing to pursue a career at sea. It allows you to study for an HNC whilst employed at sea as a trainee officer.  Successful students therefore will achieve not only an HNC but also a vocational qualification that will allow them to sail as an OOW on merchant vessels. The programme is designed in a phased model, with academic College-based phases being interspersed with time served at sea on board ship. Progression to a Higher National Diploma (HND) might also be available.

Course Entry Requirements

Minimum 36 months sea-time to include 6 months bridge watchkeeping duties

Admission to level 4 (HNC) would normally be on the basis of the applicant possessing: SQA Level 3 Diploma in Shipping & Maritime Operations or an equivalent HE access course, with the appropriate sea-time.

Mature serving seafarers This group of candidates will comprise mature serving seafarers who are undertaking either the HNC or HND Nautical Science in order to progress their professional qualifications to either ‘Officer of the Watch Unlimited’ or ‘Chief Mate Unlimited’ level respectively.
