Qualification Obtained

Foundation Degree in Media Writing and Production

UCAS Code(s):

WP83

About this Course:

This degree is for people who are already in the workplace or students who have completed a level 3 programme of study such as A-levels or a National Diploma. The course is designed to suit the needs of individual learners by nurturing written and production skills required at work. These skills are developed through analytical and creative writing, research, presentations and web and print production projects.

Assessment Methods:

Assessment aims to test a broad range of academic and creative writing skills as well as a sound ability to research, produce and evaluate print and web products. Specifically, assessment consists of essay writing, unseen examination question on audio-visual analysis and branding, personal and professional development e-folios, creative writing portfolios, pre-production research, print and web products and evaluative documents.
Assessments are spread through the year with all work finally being completed by the beginning of December.

Progression:

Some students are already in employment when they start the course, but many seek promotion or a change in career because of the course. This particular degree is a qualification in its own right. Students can, however, progress to the BA (Hons) top-up year in Media Writing with Production, providing they achieve a commendation or above at Foundation level.

In terms of students who are looking to change their career paths, move within their organisation or are simply looking to develop skills they need for employment in the future, this course introduces and embeds a broad range of skills that are applicable to many industries. The unique blend of academic and vocational skills that this course offers means that students leave this programme with significantly improved writing abilities to suit their personal and professional needs as well as a sound knowledge of planning, designing, producing and evaluating print and web products for specific audiences. In addition, the flexible design of each unit means that work completed is specific to individual needs rather than adopting a 'one size fits all approach'. Owing to this, students tend to approach study with greater enthusiasm and determination and thus leave the course with strong written and spoken communication as well as a developed knowledge of using print and web design in the workplace. We believe these skills provide the learner with a broad skill base that is appealing to a great many employers.

Special Features:

This course has a unique design that places emphasis on both academic and vocational skills for use in the workplace. Students can look forward to small class sizes with highly-qualified and experienced staff able to address their individual needs. Furthermore, the course offers flexibility regarding specific units whereby learners can design core features of the assessed work in order to suit their needs.

Course Options:

 In Year 1, modules include: Researching & Professional Communication, An Introduction to Media Writing (ie – writing for film, TV, journalism, marketing, business), Understanding Audio-Visual Images, The Power of Branding and Promotional Print and Web Production.

In Year 2, modules include: Investigating Media & Legal Practices, The Power of Media Writing, Print Production: Creating and Developing a Brand and Web Production: Creating and Developing a Brand. All modules are designed to allow experimentation and development in a range of academic and vocational media formats, and aim to prepare learners for honours level study. Teaching Methods:

The course is delivered in a mixture of styles including formal lectures, seminars workshops and one-to-one tutorials. You will have eight hours of contact time per week which will be condensed into one afternoon and evening per week (Tuesday 1-9). We have found that this structure works well with students who are in full-time employment. However, one to one tutorials and support outside taught time is available where necessary

Skills Developed:

Media Writing & Production is a marriage of the academic and the vocational that will develop skills that are needed and often underdeveloped. This course will nurture your written ability to suit your needs at work or in future employment. In addition, the media based units will provide you with the skills and understanding to design and produce web and print products.
