BSc (Hons) in Interactive Design

UCAS Code(s):

About this Course:

This course has been designed to provide a progression route to two foundation degree programmes currently offered at Blackpool & The Fylde College. Students who have successfully completed the FdSc. Interactive Media Development or FdSc. Game Design & Development (Designer) are eligible for entry to the 1 semester bridge programme. The bridge programme aims to prepare candidates for honours level study by developing skills relating specifically to project management and research. All modules within the bridge programme must be passed before progression is permitted to the honours programme.

Assessment Methods:

Candidates will be assessed by two principal means over the course of study; formal time constrained examinations and coursework. Some modules, due to the nature of the subject, will each consist of 100% coursework in order to allow students to develop the practical skills, knowledge and creative exploration required to succeed in an industrial setting. Some modules will be assessed through an electronic portfolio.

Coursework activities are designed to serve a dual purpose. Firstly, they contribute to candidates' overall profile within a module. Secondly, they are intended to help reinforce understanding of the subject matter. Completion of these assignments is seen, therefore, as an important factor in the successful completion of the course.

The examinations take place at the end of each semester in which students will complete the study of a module.

The programme will also require students to complete a dissertation that may be either research or implementation based. In this 45-credit module the students will be assigned a dissertation supervisor who will support the learner during the completion of this aspect of the course. As this module is heavily weighted the students will be required to research an area relevant to their pathway. This topic of research will be chosen through discussion and advice from the dissertation supervisor (see dissertation module).

Progression:

After completing the course, students will have the option of looking for employment or continuing their studies. There is a national and international demand within the industry for candidates that possess the skills and knowledge developed by this programme.

On completion of this programme, students will have developed problem solving, research and analytical skills. Additionally they will gain an understanding of the legal and ethical issues within the industry, as well as skills in the use of applications and quality standards. The above skills are identified in the computing honours degree benchmark statements as published by QAA (Quality Assurance Agency) for higher education 2007.

The skills developed through this programme will prepare students to naturally progress towards a master's programme within the Interactive Media discipline at Lancaster University.

Special Features:

As this course is only available to students who have already complted the foundation degrees named above, a new UCAS application form is not required. This is because candidates will have already been processed by the UCAS system when they originally enrolled on their foundation degree. Applications for this course are therefore considered as internal. Should you have any queries, please discuss these with your course tutor/leader/curriculum leader.

Course Options:

All students must successfully complete a bridging programme which consists of two modules: Research Management and Project Planning & Control. These modules are designed to develop the skills required for honours level study.

Within the honours programme there are 4 core modules that are shared between both pathways:

CMP601: Dissertation (triple module)
CMP605: Human Computer Interaction
CMP606: Advanced 3D Modelling & Animation
CMP607: Interactive Narrative

Candidates following the Media pathway will also study:

CMP608: Designing for Social Networking Spaces
CMP609: Advanced Audio & Video

Candidates following the Games pathway will also sudy:

CMP610: Designing for Multiplayer Games
CMP611: Artificial Intelligence Design Theories & Tensions

Teaching Methods:

The course will be delivered using a range of methods, which may include informal lectures, tutor-led whole group discussions, student presentations, technical workshops, computer laboratory activities, group work, group and individual research and seminars. This list is not exhaustive and teaching practices and methods will continue to evolve within the department.

Within each module, teaching, learning & assessment has been designed to provide learners with the most appropriate experience based on their knowledge and skills at that point of the course. As such, later modules place a greater emphasis on independent learning with reduced contact hours.

Throughout the course, candidates will be encouraged to become independent learners and to develop research and study skills. This will be developed in particular through the final year dissertation.

Skills Developed:

The qualifications provide a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in their sector and their national recognition by employers allows progression direct into employment. BTEC Higher Nationals offer a strong emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding in their sector. Learners are attracted to this strong vocational programme of study that meets their individual progression needs whether this is into employment or to further study on degree or professional courses.

A key progression path for BTEC Higher National Certificate and Diploma learners is to the professional qualifications offered by the British Computer Society (www.bcs.org.uk) The BTEC Higher National Certificate and Diploma also offer a progression route to the second or third year of a degree or honours degree programme, depending on the match of the BTEC Higher National units to the degree programme in question.

Transferable Skills
Consideration has also been given to traditional skills required for employment again based upon discussions with the industry. The Personal Skills Development module helps to prepare the learner for work placement by providing essential employability skills. This has been extended further with the inclusion of project management; which draws upon experience gained form all of the units. Other units will help to equip students with essential skills for this sector is the maths and communication included as part of some of the Networking and Programming units.
