What are we Looking for?

Candidates should have a minimum of 140 points (excluding key skills) or equivalent. There is also discretionary entry for mature applicants based on current/previous experience.

What Skills, Qualities and Experience do I need?

Flexible, enthusiastic attitude is a must together with the desire to succeed at the highest level. Experience of hospitality or a service sector industry is also desirable.

Assessment Methods:

Students are assessed continuously, through a combination of assignments, project-based assessments and examinations. Many of the assessments are related to industry based topics.

Progression:

The hospitality industry continues to be one the most buoyant and robust areas of commercial activity in the UK economy. It employs in excess of 2 million people and evidence suggests that there is a growing need for graduate managers. Past graduates have been successful in obtaining a variety of interesting jobs in international hotel chains both in the UK and abroad.

Special Features:

In addition to the acquisition of vocationally relevant skills and knowledge, the course offers the opportunity for putting this into practice during the placement. This is a 48 week paid placement between years 2 and 4 and it is completed abroad. A variety of locations can be chosen, all of which are subject to careful vetting and the subject of ongoing monitoring. Highly skilled placement co-ordinators are on hand to help you with your choices.

Course Options:

Year 1: Introduction to tourism; Languages; Front office operations; The accommodation environment; Food and beverage operations; Introduction to information technology and statistics; Introduction to financial management; Organisational behaviour; Accounting for decision making; Tourism and the economic environment.

Year 2: Personnel practices and employment law; Principles of law; Hospitality Management; Management research; Information technology and decision making; Human resource management; Marketing management; Languages; Comparative studies; Facilities management.

Year 3: Placement.

Year 4: Dissertation; Hospitality industry based consultancy; Corporate and business strategy; Quality and marketing dynamics for enterprise; International Hotel Management.

You may also choose two options from:

  • Licensed retail management
  • Promotion and the media
  • Buyer behaviour
  • Global tourism

Teaching Methods:

A variety of teaching methods is used including: lectures, seminars, industrial visits and visiting industrial speakers. Class time is, on average 12-14 hours per week over 2 or 3 days. However, in addition students are expected to work independently.

A feature consistently recognised in external reviews is the amount of additional support provided by staff outside of class time. This will enable all students to maximise their full potential. We are here to help you.

Skills Developed:

The programme will develop the communication, problem solving and organisational skills essential for managers in today's hospitality industry. Interpersonal and communication skills are also highly profiled. Cultural awareness also features strongly.
