The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up is for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed theatrical media make-up artist working with performers to a high level of occupational ability, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries. These industries are exceptionally competitive but highly rewarding.
This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a professional theatrical media make-up artist including: health and safety practice; client care and communication; airbrush make-up to the face; camouflage make-up; media make-up; fashion and photographic make-up; style and fit postiche and the application of prosthetic pieces and bald caps.
Course Entry Requirements
GCSE maths and English A*-C or Level 1 Functional skills in maths and English including a Pass for Level 2 Media Make-up. Excellent communication skills and a keen desire to work with the general public is a must.

Modules and Assessment
Qualification: VTCT Level 3 Diploma Theatrical Special Hair and Media Make Up , 1 year full time course.
Units of study:
Apply airbrush make-up to the face
Style and fit postiche
Fashion and photographic make-up
Client care and communication in beauty-related industries
Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
You will be required to buy an approved uniform and kit for the course. This course is delivered at the Bispham Campus.
The course is assessed using a variety of methods including observation of practical work, written assignments, case studies, online test papers and externally set assessments. Students will produce an electronic portfolio to evidence their assessments. Students will complete 31 x practical observations, 5 x externally set tests, 10 x assignments and 1 x portfolio of evidence.
Teaching and Learning Methods
The course is delivered in a variety of ways to support your preferred learning style. Methods will include practical demonstrations, collaborative work, individual study, e-learning all of which will promote your Higher Order Thinking Skills. Within the school we use a range of on-line applications to support, enhance and motivate learning.
Work Placement and Field Trips
Work placement is a compulsory element of the study programme for all 16-18 year olds, students will spend one day per week in a work placement. For 19+ students work placement is encouraged and dates set on an individual basis. Please note it is the responsibility of each student to find their placement.
All staff involved in the delivery of further education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant vocational and industrial experience and professional practice.
Students who are 18 or under and resident in the EU pay no course fees. Read our tuition fees guide for students 19 and over.
All students will be expected to provide their own stationery, to include: pens, notepad and an A4 folder. All students will also require a bun ring as hair must be up in a bun at all times whilst in College. Replacement ID badges will be at a cost of £3 or £8 if incorporated with a bus pass. The purchase of a fob watch is optional. For photocopying, students are provided with the first 80 black and white free of charge. Any additonal copies for black and white are charged at 4p per copy.
For 16-18 year olds all equipment, including a uniform, is provided by the college. Full, flat, black, leather or durable shoes (no trainers or fabric) must be purchased and worn at all times with the uniform. For 19+ students a uniform, at a cost of £35, must be purchased ( order forms are provided by the College)
