Foundation Degree in Gaming Technology
We believe this course, which is in its third year of operation, is unique in this country.
It is validated by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN).
The programme is designed to meet the needs of students wishing to develop an understanding of the principles and skills involved in the design, operation and maintenance of gaming and coin slot technology equipment. It has a strong vocational emphasis and provides practical and general transferable skills in readiness for employment in the industry.
We are looking for people who have a keen interest in this highly specialised branch of technology. Relevant industrial experience would be particularly beneficial but is not essential.
Every application is treated individually since we are looking for people who, on successful completion of the course, will endorse our reputation for producing students with excellent employability skills.
This is the right course for you if you have an interest in this emerging technology and want to know how the systems are designed, manufactured and made to work.
You must have a realisation that the course is vocationally orientated and that there is a mix of formal classroom lectures and work of a more practical nature.
You will need a real interest and enthusiasm for the technology.
Any work-related experience would be beneficial.
All applicants are viewed in terms of their employability.
Thus you will need to demonstrate communication skills, commitment, punctuality, regular attendance and a recognition of one's responsibilities in an industry which is most conscious of the need to project a good image.
This is mostly carried out by means of assignments which are set throughout the duration of the subject unit. Typically a subject unit would contain 3 or 4 assignments. Some subject units also contain end-of-unit tests.
We have well-developed working relationships with many of the major gaming equipment manufacturers and casino operators, for example Bally, Crown, Carnival Cruises and Gala.
We help and support our students in gaining employment with such employers.
The gaming and coin slot technology industry is an expanding industry for which this course has been specifically designed.
Students undertake a work placement and, on successful completion of the course, are well-placed to gain employment in this industry.
The course is delivered in the college's Gaming Academy, a facility unique to this college. It contains dedicated coin slot laboratories.
These can include lectures, practical activities in workshops, laboratory work and demonstrations, directed and independent learning, group work, tutorials and seminars.
The weekly timetable averages at 13-15 hours per week.
There is a facility for one-to one tutorials.
The School of Engineering and Computing offers an Open Door policy whereby teaching staff and some resources such as computer rooms can be accessed on an informal basis throughout the week.
General: communication, ability to apply technology, the managing and developing of one's self, being able to work with and relate to others, the ability to apply design and be creative.
