The programme is intended for all those serious about a career in the diverse field of fashion and costume for performance.This programme will offer you a broad and creative learning experience and help you to develop as a dynamic and entrepreneurial individual, well equipped to succeed. The programme will help you to develop a deep understanding of the interrelationship, Designer/Maker and the performance environment by giving you the opportunity to respond creatively to the needs of theatrical performance. This will be implemented by industry related briefs that will provide real scenarios and deadlines giving you the opportunity to acquire professional work ethics in areas such as time planning and working within a creative team. The key areas are research, design, visual communication and manufacture and the main aim of the programme is for you to attain a professional level across all these fields. The most important values are the ability to develop creative ideas and visually communicate these through a range of two dimensional and three dimensional outcomes.
The programme has been designed to offer you learning opportunities that are wide ranging in terms of knowledge, skills and understanding and also to support your progression as an independent and innovative designer/maker. There is a strong theoretical base that will allow you to understand and place into context all practical exploration, in terms of historical, cultural, social and contemporary issues
Assessment will be based upon the outcomes of specific assignments, formal essays and journals delivered through each module as well as a final portfolio in the third year of study. Clear assessment criteria will be given at the start of each module and regular feedback will inform progress and support the learning on the programme.
The programme will provide a platform for the next generation of designers, skilled in sourcing creative solutions to design and production issues and who can demonstrate an innovative approach to the changing demands of the industry. Students will be introduced to specialist working practices that will equip them to become successful designers, costumiers and stylists.
Career pathways include, Fashion/Costume Designer/Maker for performance in theatre, film. Music video or Advertising, Stylist, Wardrobe manager/Assistant
You will be working on practical assignments with a wide variety of techniques. You will be expected to research, plan, explore, develop, produce and then evaluate your ideas. The training we offer draws on the professional experience of our academic team with contributions from industry professionals making this a truly inspiring course.
Once you’ve decided to apply for a course, you’ll need to work out whether you satisfy our entry requirements (or will have done by the time your course starts). Providing you meet the criteria, you can then apply for your course. Full-time applications go through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), although foundation degree graduates progressing to a relevant top-up programme can (subject to certain criteria) apply to the College direct.
