ESOL Programme (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

About this Course:

Our ESOL course is designed for second language speakers (EU and non EU) looking to stay and make a life for themselves here in the UK. The programme teaches English language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) alongside citizenship skills and leads to a qualification that is recognised by the Home Office, colleges and employers. Learners who successfully complete the course will be able to apply for a VISA extension or UK citizenship, or may be able to use the qualification to apply for another college course or a job (depending on the level).

Assessment Methods:

You will have an initial assessment first, when we will determine what level your language is at and place you in an appropriate class.  You will take ESOL Skills for Life exams at the end of the course.

Progression:

You can progress to the next level of ESOL, or progress onto a vocational course within the college dependent on your level of English.

Special Features:

All our accredited courses include citizenship content as required by the Home Office/UKBA.  Our 16  - 19 year old provision also includes Functional Skills Maths and Employability Skills.  Those learners who may be classed as international students (non EU) may be subject to higher fees dependent on their residency status.  This can be determined at assessment.

Course Options:

Our programme is based at our University Centre in Blackpool while those on the 16-19 programme will be based at our Bispham Campus.We run full-time and part-time courses. The full-time course is 13.5 hours per week for 35 weeks from September till June. The part-time course runs for 31 weeks from September to May. Part-time learners can either study 2 afternoons a week or 1 evening a week.

Teaching Methods:

Learners are taught using a mix of grammar based course books, as well as relevant and appropriate citizenship materials.  The course is classroom based.

Skills Developed:

  • English Language skills, – You will develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening through the use of real and up-to-date teaching resources, which will incorporate the necessary grammar at each level.
  • Citizenship skills – These skills are designed to help you easily adapt to life in the UK. We cover areas such as education, health, housing, transport and employability (applying for a job).
