BA (Hons) in English Language & Literary Studies (FT)
QQ13
This English degree is a unique blend of Linguistics, English Literature and Creative Writing. You will develop skills in recognising how fiction and non-fiction texts work and in writing your own texts. The course has been specially designed to enable students to become 'English specialists' as this course offers a unique opportunity to study three key areas of English. The degree also offers the opportunity for you to acquire a much broader knowledge of English than other courses offered at other universities in the country. By the time you graduate, you will be well equipped for post graduate study and many careers such as teaching, journalism, advertising, public relations and management.
For instance, if you are interested in teaching as a career and you wish to study for a post graduate certificate in education (PGCE) after your degree, modules like 'Teaching and Learning' are offered for you to study in your final year. This may aid your application in what can be a competitive market for student places. Students may also find it useful to contribute to a student magazine and hone their writing skills in preparation for careers in writing and journalism
Assessment will be carried out through a combination of coursework, examinations and presentations. You will also need to develop a portfolio of writing and undertake a final year dissertation. The latter will involve some research and presentation work towards the end of the programme. You will be guided and assisted throughout with study skills and personal/academic tutorial sessions.
By the time you graduate, you will be well equipped for post graduate study and many careers such as teaching, journalism, advertising, public relations, public services and management. Previous graduates have gone on to teach in primary, secondary and post-compulsory education. Others have gone on to study post-graduate degrees. Some have joined the police force and other public service institutions.
The degree is an established HE programme, which has earned a good reputation. Drop out rates are low and our students are supported through our small class sizes and one-to-one tutorial system, which addresses students' needs more comprehensively. The teaching team get to know our students on a first name basis and give individual support through personal and academic tutorials.
Teaching is delivered to small student groups, through a variety of teaching styles. This ranges from formal lectures to seminars, workshops and one-to-one tutorials. Every year group has a personal and academic tutor assigned to them. Students can also access HE mentors outside of normal teaching hours. We timetable our teaching sessions over a two day period so that students can integrate part time work commitments and home responsibilities.
This course offers a distinctive opportunity for students to integrate their study of language, literature and writing, through written and spoken continuous assessment. You will be encouraged and supported to take part in peer teaching and both group and individual presentations. Students will develop skills in all these key areas and become 'English Specialists'. Such skills are much sought after in a variety of careers and post-graduate study.
