About this Course:

Electrical/electronic engineering deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electro-magnetism. If you want to specialise in this field, our HNC/D programmes will give you a recognised qualification that will allow you to enter directly into employment or progress to higher-level study.

Entry Requirements:

You should have 120 UCAS points or above in an appropriate discipline. Applications from mature students and those with relevant work experience are welcomed.

Assessment Methods:

Each module is assessed either continuously throughout the course or by assignments and/or end-of-module exams.

Progression:

Successful students could go on to pursue careers as technician electrical engineers or in engineering management. Many past students are now employed by major companies such as British Energy, Westinghouse, BAE Systems, GEC and Ford Motor Company as design, production and project engineers. Alternatively, you could continue your studies by progressing either to our BEng Mechatronics programme or to the second year of most other engineering degrees.

Course Options:

There are 4 mandatory units:

  • Engineering Science;
  • Analytical Methods for Engineering;
  • Project Design;
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles.

You will need to take a further 11 option units, which may include:

  • Electronics;
  • Digital and Analogue Devices and Circuits;
  • Power Electronics; Electrical Power;
  • Programmable Logic Controllers;
  • Advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Techniques;
  • Managing the Work of Teams and Individuals;
  • Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principles;
  • Further Electrical Principles;
  • BIT;
  • Robot Technology;
  • Business Management Techniques;
  • Engineering Design;
  • Further Maths.

Once you’ve decided to apply for a course, you’ll need to work out whether you satisfy our entry requirements (or will have done by the time your course starts). Providing you meet the criteria, you can then apply for your course. Full-time applications go through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), although foundation degree graduates progressing to a relevant top-up programme can (subject to certain criteria) apply to the College direct.
